Understanding ‘Limited Scope’ Representation

Lawyer discussing legal documents with clients at office desk.

Limited Scope Representation (LSR), provides an affordable alternative that allows you to seek legal assistance for specific aspects of your case. Also known as ‘unbundled legal services’,  an attorney helps you for specific portions or issues within your case, while you, the client handles the rest.

Do I Need a Lawyer?

When someone is faced with a legal challenge or concern, this is the question I get  asked the most. My answer is usually the same…”It depends…” One innovative option that is increasingly being used by individuals is the ‘Limited Scope Representaion’ model. With this model, from the very beginning, a lawyer and a clent agree that the lawyer will provide some, but not all of the services needed in a legal matter while the client address the remaining issues.  This model generally includes anything less than full representation and has been proven to provide better, and more affordable  access to competent legal services.

At times, procedural or administrative assistance, (i.e. ‘what form to use?’; how to make an electronic filing, how to respond to a complaint, etc.), is  all that is needed. At other times, assistance is need in building a legal strategy or understanding possible outcomes and options or decision-making.

Experience has shown that Limited Scope Representation is appropriate for use in many, but not all types of legal matters. But for those areas of law typically involving self-represented parties,  Limited Scope Representaion has become an extremely helpful innovation for several reasons including:

 (1) Cost Effectiveness: Clients only pay for the specific services they need, making legal representation more accessible;

(2) Increased Flexibility and Control:  Clients have more conrol over their cases, deciding which aspects they need help with and handling others themselves;

(3) Tailored Legal Assisstance: Services can be customized to their clients’ specific needs, focusing on complex legal procedures whle the clientmanages simpler tasks;

(4) Improved Access to Justice: This approach can bridge the gap for those who cannot afford full representation or don’t qualify for legal services.

While Limited Scope Representation is a helpful option for many clents, it is NOT appropriate for every client and legal problem.
